Incessant Learning

A martial artist knelt before his master in a ceremony to receive hard-earned Black Belt after years of relentless training. "Before granting the belt you must pass one more test," sensei (master) solemnly told. 'What is the true meaning of the Black Belt and Why?” sensei asked. “The end of my journey and a well-deserved reward for all of my hard work” the student replied. The sensei spoke: "You are not ready for the Black Belt. Return in one year."

A year later, the sensei asked, "What is the true meaning of the Black Belt?" "A symbol of distinction and the highest achievement in our art," the young man said. The sensei told: "You are not ready for the Black Belt. Again a year later the student knelt before his sensei and heard the same question. This time the man replied, "The Black Belt represents not the end, but the beginning of a never ending journey of discipline, work and the pursuit of an ever-higher standard." "Yes," said the master. "You are now ready to receive the Black Belt and begin your work."

Someone rightly said, “School ends but education doesn’t.” Grades don’t measure intelligence. Albert Einstein said, “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in the school.” Anyone who stops learning is old. Anyone who keeps learning stays young – Henry ford.  True learning happens both in winning and losing. There is no external wall to end learning other than you. There are many doors to begin learning starting with you. When educating the minds of our youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts – Dalai Lama
